The East of London Family History Society
The East of London Family History Society, formed in 1978, is a charity organisation, (No. 1094419) and is commonly referred to as The EoLFHS. The Society is a member of The Federation of Family History Societies.
The EoLFHS currently comprises more than 3,500 people from all over the world who share a common interest in furthering family history and genealogical research in the historic area to the east of the City of London, comprising the London Boroughs of Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge, Barking & Dagenham, and Havering.
We currently have members in the following countries: Australia, Barbados, Canada, Finland, France, Guyana, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom, United States of America.
We focus on a wide variety of aspects of life in the area during the 17th, 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Cockney Ancestor, our quarterly journal is sent out to our members enabling those at home and further afield to enjoy general articles on family history, learn more about the area of their ancestors, and be kept up to date with events and all the services that the society offers. Our excellent online forum gives members a place to exchange information, ask advice and publish their interests.
The society has no central offices, telephones or paid staff and all services are provided by volunteers.
We have four branches which meet monthly at the following locations: Upminster, Barking, Wanstead, Bishopsgate. All meetings are open to members and non-members. We also have a computer group which meets at the Havering venue in Upminster.
For further details visit our website or contact our secretary, Mrs Vera Bangs, 23 Louvaine Avenue, Wickford, Essex SS12 0DP or at [email protected]
The East of London Family History Society contributed to the 1851 England, Wales & Scotland Census and the National Burial Index For England & Wales. Both records are available through Findmypast's Plus and Pro subscriptions.
