Derbyshire Family History Society
The Derbyshire Family History Society is a registered charity no. 517162 and has around 2000 members worldwide. Our main aims are to assist members to trace their family history, and to collect, preserve and make available archival material relating to family and local history in Derbyshire.
Monthly meetings are held around the county at Derby, Glossop and Shirland. They all cater for a wide range of interests and usually include a speaker on a subject related to family or local history. Members can meet to discuss progress on their research and at all meetings there are a variety of books for sale relating to local and family history.
We organise memorial inscription recording sessions in churchyards all over Derbyshire, and members are encouraged to come along and help expand the increasing society archives by helping to transcribe and check various records. There are several ongoing projects, from parish register and will recording, to the transcribing of the Derbyshire registrars records of birth, marriages and deaths, for inclusion on findmypast.co.uk
The society's permanent archive is housed at the Society Library and Research Centre, at Bridge Chapel House, Derby, which holds all of the society's reference material and is manned by knowledgeable volunteers to help visitors with their researches. We are open to members and non-members for research purposes every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10am - 4pm.
The society magazine is published quarterly, and contains many interesting articles about our hobby. It is sent to all members, and includes lists of all new members and their interests. A comprehensive publications list is included with the magazine, and items may be ordered by post.
Derbyshire FHS is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies.
The society has its own website that may be found here: http://www.dfhs.org.uk
