Sheffield & District Family History Society
Founded in 1977, Sheffield & District Family History Society is a well established society with a membership of more than 1,000 scattered across the world. The society’s focus is the area that lies within the boundaries of the modern Metropolitan Borough of the City of Sheffield, built across the Pennine foothills in South Yorkshire. During the nineteenth century this ancient market town grew dramatically to become an internationally renowned centre for the production of steel and cutlery. Today it is the fourth largest city in England with two universities and a diverse economic and social base.
The society holds regular meetings in Sheffield where speakers cover a range of family and local history topics, there are publications are for sale and enthusiasts can meet and exchange information. The quarterly journal ‘The Flowing Stream’ contains members’ articles, news and information about genealogy, events and the activities of the society. New members’ family history research interests are listed in the journal and may also be found on the very informative website.
An active group of volunteers are engaged in various indexing and transcribing projects and the data produced is made available for purchase through the society website, GENfair and the search service at Findmypast.
Sheffield & District FHS is a member of the Yorkshire Regional Group of Family History Societies and is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies.
